Pay Mesh

The App That Trusts You With Your Own Data

Pay Mesh is an Android expense splitting application built on a single, uncompromising principle: your financial data belongs to you, lives on your device, and never leaves it unless you choose. Designed for groups of 2 to 20 people, it handles shared costs for travel, meals, shared housing, events, and everyday group spending, entirely offline, without an account, without a server, and without ever asking for your email address.

How Pay Mesh Works1. Getting Started in Seconds

When you open Pay Mesh for the first time, you enter your display name that's it. No email verification link. No password. No phone number. No terms-of-service wall. The moment you tap "Continue," you are inside the app and ready to track expenses. A new user can create a group, add members, and log their first expense in under 60 seconds.

From the home screen, you create a group (give it a name, a color, an icon, and a currency), add your friends by their first names, designate one member as "me" to speed up future entry, and start recording.

2. Recording Expenses

Every expense captures the essentials: a title, the total amount, who paid, the date, an optional category, and an optional note. The real power lies in how Pay Mesh splits that amount across members. Four split modes are supported:

  • Equal Split — the total is divided equally among all included members. As you type the amount, each person's share updates live on screen.
  • Exact Split — you manually type each person's exact share. The app shows a running total and flags it in red if your numbers don't add up.
  • Percentage Split — you assign percentages that must sum to exactly 100%. Ideal for situations where contributions are proportional rather than equal.
  • Shares Split — you assign weight units (e.g., 1 share for most people, 2 shares for someone who ordered double). Pay Mesh calculates each person's amount from the ratios automatically.

Expenses can be edited after the fact, and deleted ones are soft-removed (so sync integrity is maintained), with a 5-second undo option.

3. Automatic Balance Calculation

Pay Mesh continuously computes each member's net balance: total amount paid minus total amount owed. A positive balance means the group owes that person money; a negative balance means they owe the group. Balances are recalculated on every change and displayed in a clear, color-coded list — green for creditors, red for debtors.

4. Smart Settlement Suggestions

Rather than leaving you to figure out who pays whom, Pay Mesh applies a greedy creditor-debtor matching algorithm that computes the minimum number of transactions needed to settle all outstanding debts. For a group of 20 people, this calculation completes in under 1 millisecond. The result is a simple, human-readable list:

"Aisha pays Raza: PKR 1,200"
 "Bilal pays Fatima: PKR 650"

Tap "Mark Paid" on any suggestion and Pay Mesh records that settlement, updating everyone's balance instantly. No cash needs to physically change hands in the app — it simply keeps the record straight.

5. Peer-to-Peer Synchronization (No Cloud Required)

This is where Pay Mesh is genuinely unlike anything else on the market. Since there is no server, syncing group data between friends' phones happens directly, device to device, through two methods:

QR Code Sync
The host device encodes the entire group state as a compressed JSON payload and renders it as a QR code on screen. If the data exceeds the capacity of a single QR code (approximately 2.9 KB), Pay Mesh automatically sequences it across multiple codes displayed one after another. The receiving device scans them in order, reassembles the payload, and merges the data — no internet required, works in any lighting condition.

Bluetooth Sync
For larger groups or richer datasets, Pay Mesh uses Bluetooth RFCOMM (the same reliable serial-port protocol used by countless professional devices). The host device advertises a custom Bluetooth LE service UUID; the guest device discovers it, selects it, and a bidirectional data transfer begins. The exchange is chunked into 512-byte packets with acknowledgements, reassembled on the other end, and both devices merge each other's state simultaneously. No pairing is required, and a tap-to-confirm step on the sending side prevents accidental transfers.

Both sync methods use the same Last Write Wins (LWW) merge strategy: every record carries a UUID and a timestamp, and the most recent version of any conflicting record wins. Scanning the same QR code twice has no effect — the merge is fully idempotent.

6. Data Export and Backup

Pay Mesh gives you complete control over your records through three export formats:

  • PDF Summary — a formatted document including a member summary table, settlement suggestions, the full expense list with each person's share, and a footer confirming the data was stored locally. Generated using Android's built-in PDF API with no third-party dependency.
  • CSV Export — a UTF-8 spreadsheet of all expenses with dynamic columns per member, suitable for importing into any financial tool.
  • Encrypted JSON Backup (v1.1+) — the entire database, serialized and encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The encryption key is derived from your passphrase using PBKDF2 with 100,000 iterations and a random 16-byte salt. The passphrase is never stored anywhere. Files are saved with the .paymesh extension and can be restored to any device running Pay Mesh.
How Pay Mesh Is Better Than Its CompetitorsThe Competitor Landscape

Splitwise, Tricount, and IOU are the dominant expense-splitting apps. Each requires one or more of the following: user account registration (email or phone), an active internet connection to sync, and cloud servers to store your financial data. These are not incidental design choices — they are the foundation of those apps' business models.

Pay Mesh was designed from the ground up to eliminate every one of these requirements.

Advantage 1 — Absolute, Verifiable Privacy

Mainstream apps hold your spending habits on their servers. They know when you eat out, how much you spend on accommodation, and who you travel with. Even if they claim not to sell this data, the data exists on their infrastructure — accessible to their engineers, subject to breaches, and potentially subject to legal orders.

Pay Mesh's privacy is not a policy — it is an architectural guarantee enforced at the operating system level. The app declares zero network permissions in its Android manifest. The Android OS will physically prevent it from opening any network socket, ever. There is no INTERNET permission, no analytics SDK, no crash-reporting library, no advertising SDK. This can be verified independently by inspecting the APK.

Your spending data is stored in a SQLite database inside the app's private internal storage at /data/data/com.paymesh/databases/ — inaccessible to other apps without root access. No one has seen it. No one can.

Advantage 2 — True Offline Operation, Not "Offline Mode"

Many competitors advertise offline capabilities but still require internet for initial account creation, periodic sync, or certain features to unlock. "Offline mode" in those apps means "degraded mode."

For Pay Mesh, offline is not a mode. It is the only mode. The app:

  • Functions fully without a SIM card installed
  • Functions in Airplane Mode (with Bluetooth sync still available)
  • Does not require Google Play Services
  • Includes all currency data, category lists, and UI assets bundled in the APK — nothing is downloaded after installation
  • Has a target APK size of under 15 MB

This makes Pay Mesh the only viable option for backpacking through areas with no cell coverage, international travel without data roaming, camping trips, or any situation where reliable connectivity cannot be assumed.

Advantage 3 — Frictionless Onboarding With Zero Registration

The account creation barrier is one of the most common reasons people abandon apps before their first use. Asking a group of friends to all sign up for an account — with email verification for each — before you can track a single shared coffee is absurd friction for a simple task.

Pay Mesh requires nothing. Open the app, type your name, start. Members of your group are added by display name only — no email, no phone number, no existing app account. A friend who has never heard of Pay Mesh can be added to your group instantly. When you want to share the expense state with them, you show them a QR code.

The app's usability standard is explicit: a new user must be able to create a group, add three members, and enter their first expense within 60 seconds. All primary actions are reachable within three taps from the main screen.

What Pay Mesh Offers That Competitors Do Not1. Device-to-Device Sync Without a Server

No competing mainstream app offers direct P2P sync via QR code or Bluetooth. This is a unique technical capability that makes Pay Mesh the only tool in its class that remains fully functional in a group where nobody has mobile data.

2. A Verified Zero-Internet Guarantee

No other consumer expense-splitting app ships without INTERNET permission. Pay Mesh's manifest is independently auditable. This is not a marketing claim — it is a technical constraint enforced by the Android permission system, verified at every build.

3. Data That Outlasts the Company

Cloud-dependent apps can — and do — shut down, paywalled, or change their data policies. When that happens, users lose access to their group histories. Pay Mesh has no backend to shut down. The app's functionality is entirely self-contained. Your data exists in a local database and exportable files that will remain readable long after any company's servers go offline.

4. Four Flexible Split Methods

Most competitors offer equal splits and, at best, custom amount splits. Pay Mesh offers equal, exact, percentage, and weighted shares — covering every real-world scenario from a simple dinner split to a complex multi-contributor event budget.

5. Anonymous Members

Adding someone to a group in Splitwise or Tricount typically requires their email or phone number, which sends them an invitation they may not want. Pay Mesh members are display names only — no contact information, no notification to the member, no obligation for them to download anything. Perfect for one-off events where not everyone wants to create yet another app account.

6. Military-Grade Encrypted Local Backup

The .paymesh encrypted backup format uses AES-256-GCM with PBKDF2 key derivation — the same encryption standards used in professional security tools. Your backup can be stored anywhere (local storage, a USB drive, your own Google Drive) and restored to any device. The passphrase never touches the app's storage.

7. A Settlement Algorithm That Minimizes Payments

Pay Mesh uses a greedy creditor-debtor matching algorithm that guarantees the smallest possible number of payment transactions. For 20 members, it runs in O(N log N) time and completes in under 1 millisecond. Competitors often show a naive list of every imbalance without simplification, resulting in far more transfers than necessary.

8. Arithmetic Precision You Can Trust

Monetary calculations in Pay Mesh are performed in integer arithmetic using the smallest currency unit (paisa for PKR, cents for USD) at the application layer, converting to decimals only for display. This eliminates the floating-point rounding errors that accumulate in naive implementations — critical when tracking hundreds of expenses across a long trip.

Who Pay Mesh Is Built For

The Traveler — Aisha and five friends backpacking through rural areas with unreliable cell coverage. They share meals, guesthouses, and transport daily, sync over Bluetooth each evening at camp, and settle up at the trip's end.

The Privacy-Conscious Flatmate — Raza shares a flat with two housemates and refuses to upload utility bill data to any cloud service. He tracks recurring household expenses and exports a PDF for his own records.

The Event Organizer — Fatima is coordinating a large family event across three days with ten financial contributors. She logs vendor payments on the spot and shares the current group state with a co-organizer via QR code at the venue.

The Low-Data User — Bilal uses a prepaid SIM with very limited data. He cannot afford the background data consumption of a cloud-synced app and needs full offline functionality with zero data usage, ever.

Summary

Pay Mesh is not trying to be a slightly more private version of Splitwise. It is a fundamentally different product built on a fundamentally different architecture. Where cloud-based competitors require accounts, internet connections, and servers as the price of functionality, Pay Mesh treats all three as unnecessary risks to be eliminated. The result is an expense splitter that is faster to start, more private by design, more reliable in the field, and more trustworthy over the long term — precisely because it gives the data back to the people it belongs to.
